GENEVA — H.E. Ambassador Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, Somali Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, led a high-level delegation in the 52nd session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, as reported by the Ministry’s Official Facebook Page.
The Somali delegation presented to representatives of 108 participating countries a package of qualitative achievements made by the Federal Government in strengthening human rights over the past four and a half years, according to the Ministry’s Official Platform.
In a comprehensive speech at the UN headquarters in Geneva, the Minister highlighted Somalia’s successive successes, most notably reclaiming full sovereignty over rights issues and establishing the National Independent Human Rights Commission as a pillar of the rule of law.
The Minister expressed Somalia’s appreciation for the constructive recommendations provided by friendly and brotherly nations regarding the national report, reaffirming the Federal Government’s openness to international cooperation serving the Somali people’s aspirations for justice and equality.
The session witnessed broad international acclaim, with 104 out of 108 participating countries commending Somali steps and praising the tangible progress in legislative and institutional reforms that bolstered Somalia’s standing in global rights compliance indicators.
The Somali delegation participating in this UN forum included representatives from the Presidency, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Attorney General’s Office, reflecting a collaborative effort across state institutions to ensure the success of the national presentation.
The Somali government aims to formulate a new approach for implementing UPR recommendations, based on the strategic partnership signed with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to ensure alignment between international standards and local reality.
The Ministry emphasized that the agreement with the OHCHR will create a qualitative shift in monitoring and follow-up processes, as oversight mechanisms will be activated from within the country rather than through external reporting, enhancing transparency and field credibility.
The delegation concluded its participation by affirming continued national efforts to stabilize rights foundations, in line with Somalia’s international obligations, and ensuring the protection of citizen dignity as a top priority in the journey of comprehensive national recovery.
Somalia’s participation in the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva serves as an international testament to the maturity of the national human rights experience. Transitioning from external monitoring to independent national assessment, in partnership with UN bodies, reflects a firm political will to consolidate the values of freedom and justice. It places Somalia on its rightful path as a proactive state that respects human dignity and safeguards rights as an integral part of its comprehensive revival.
