Somali-UN move to strengthen human rights foundations

​MOGADISHU — H.E. Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed, Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission, discussed today in Mogadishu with H.E. George Conway, the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, ways to enhance joint cooperation, as reported by the Commission’s Official Facebook Page.

The high-level meeting focused on formulating the international support mechanisms required for the Commission during its structural founding phase, ensuring it plays its pivotal role in protecting public freedoms and building effective communication with UN systems, according to the Commission’s Official Platform.

Both sides reviewed plans to develop the Commission’s institutional capacities, focusing on modernizing administrative systems, developing violation monitoring mechanisms, and enhancing the effectiveness of complaint management systems to ensure rapid response and transparency in handling various rights issues.

The discussions emphasized the importance of community awareness as a fundamental pillar for spreading a human rights culture, agreeing to launch joint programs aimed at informing citizens of their legal rights and strengthening public awareness of the Commission’s independent regulatory role.

For her part, Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed reaffirmed the Commission’s absolute commitment to total independence and institutional integrity, emphasizing that all its work is formulated in accordance with the international “Paris Principles” governing national human rights institutions.

The UN Resident Coordinator, George Conway, expressed the United Nations’ full support for the ambitious steps taken by the Somali Commission, confirming the international organization’s readiness to provide technical and logistical expertise to help stabilize justice and protect human dignity in Somalia.

​The meeting also touched upon aligning national legislation with international conventions, as the Commission seeks to be the trusted national reference ensuring state compliance with its rights obligations to the international community, serving the path of comprehensive national stability.

The session concluded by affirming continued close coordination between the Commission and the UN mission to ensure the sustainability of development projects and build an integrated rights system that contributes to achieving social welfare, justice, and equality for all.

These talks between the National Commission and the United Nations constitute a cornerstone in Somalia’s journey toward consolidating a state of institutions and law. Commitment to the “Paris Principles” is not merely an organizational procedure, but a clear declaration of the maturity of the national vision in protecting citizen dignity and ensuring that safeguarding human rights remains the supreme standard in the journey of comprehensive national recovery.
