SoDMA confirms death of 17 Somali migrants by drowning

MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has announced a tragic loss of life, confirming the death of 17 Somali migrants in a devastating shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea.

SoDMA Chairperson, Mr. Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle, stated that the victims perished while attempting to cross the Mediterranean waters between Algeria and Spain, in a desperate journey that ended in tragedy beneath the waves.

According to the agency’s preliminary reports, the group consisted of 12 males and 5 females, aged between 18 and 30, whose lives were cut short in the prime of their youth.

In an official statement reflecting the gravity of the situation, the Chairperson expressed deep sorrow, describing the loss as a profound wound to the conscience of the Somali people, affirming that authorities are closely monitoring the incident.

Fulfilling its humanitarian mandate, the agency has obtained photographs of the victims and is urgently calling upon the families of the deceased to contact the agency’s headquarters in Mogadishu to facilitate identification and provide necessary support.

Chairperson Abdulle extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the Somali nation, praying for the souls of the departed to find eternal peace and for their families to be granted strength and patience during this difficult time.

The statement noted that investigations are ongoing, in coordination with relevant authorities, to gather further details surrounding the tragic event, emphasizing the urgent need for collective national and international efforts to combat these life-threatening crossings.

Irregular migration remains a bleeding wound in the body of humanity, as today’s tragedy mirrors the cycle of grief written by despair upon the pages of the sea; these lives stand as a testament to the heavy price paid by those seeking change, and a somber reminder of the imperative to establish safe pathways that uphold human dignity and protect the fundamental right to life for future generations.
