BAIDOA — As part of its ongoing humanitarian efforts to mitigate the impact of environmental and economic crises, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) concluded a large-scale relief operation in Baidoa. The agency delivered essential food aid to hundreds of drought-affected families, reaffirming the state’s commitment to protecting the food security of the most vulnerable amidst current global challenges.
The two-day relief operation involved the distribution of integrated food baskets containing flour, rice, and cooking oil. In its final phase, the initiative reached an additional 520 families, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to over 1,000 households among internally displaced persons (IDPs) and high-risk groups in the capital of the Bay region.
H.E. Mahamud Moallim Abdulle, Chairperson of SoDMA—as reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA)—explained that the assistance focused specifically on persons with disabilities and the elderly, ensuring that support reached those in acute need and bolstered their resilience against resource scarcity.
During the distribution, the Chairperson noted that rising global food prices, driven by international conflicts, have compounded the local drought crisis. This requires a swift and integrated government response to ensure market stability and secure the basic needs of citizens.
The distribution was overseen directly by the Chairperson in cooperation with the South West State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. Officials—as cited by the National News Agency—emphasized the importance of transparency in distribution mechanisms to ensure justice and comprehensive access to affected areas.
Baidoa remains a strategic hub for relief operations, hosting the state’s largest concentration of IDPs. This makes it a top priority for SoDMA’s programs, which also include water trucking and emergency medical and food relief for those impacted by climate-driven changes.
Local officials expressed their appreciation for this vital support, asserting that coordinated efforts between the federal government and regional states form the cornerstone for addressing consecutive humanitarian crises and protecting the social fabric from the risks of famine and forced displacement.
The agency urged all international and local partners to bolster their contributions to support national recovery plans, noting that the continuity of aid is the only guarantee to prevent the worsening of humanitarian conditions in areas most affected by climate fluctuations and global economic instability.
The intensification of relief operations in Baidoa reflects the state’s strategy of transitioning from emergency response to building community resilience. Establishing solid coordination frameworks is the true guarantee for transforming humanitarian pledges into tangible field reality, contributing to a stable future where aid serves as a bridge toward permanent recovery and comprehensive human dignity in the face of major challenges.
