National initiative to root peace and reconciliation values in Somalia

MOGADISHU — Reflecting a national vision aimed at building a cohesive and sustainable society, the Somali government continues its tireless efforts to bolster community peace through the adoption of advanced educational and intellectual strategies designed to eliminate conflict origins and establish values of peaceful coexistence.

In this context, H.E. Abdulkadir Ali, Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, chaired a high-level meeting to discuss executive mechanisms for accelerating the “National Peace Education Initiative” as an integral part of the comprehensive national reconciliation process.

As reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the meeting brought together elite government leaders, including the Directors General of the Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs and the National Security Agency, to ensure strategic integration between the security, educational, and religious sectors.

Participants explored ways to integrate concepts of peace and harmony into educational curricula and community activities, viewing them as the most powerful tools for conflict prevention and fortifying younger generations against extremist ideologies, thereby serving long-term national stability.

The National Agency (SONNA) further highlighted in its coverage that the meeting emphasized that peace education is not merely a passing educational project, but a strategic and humanitarian necessity to enhance social cohesion and build a unified national culture.

The discussions culminated in an agreement to establish a “Peace Education Steering Committee,” tasked with direct oversight and coordination of efforts among various stakeholders to ensure the initiative’s implementation according to a timeline aligned with the Somali people’s aspirations.

According to SONNA’s official sources, the newly formed committee will work to harmonize national initiatives with international standards in peacebuilding, marking a qualitative shift from managing the aftermath of conflicts to proactive prevention through education.

The participants concluded that the success of this initiative requires broad community solidarity involving educational institutions, religious platforms, and the media to create an environment that fosters tolerance and ensures a bright future for coming generations.

These institutional efforts reflect a firm belief that lasting peace is not only forged through political treaties but is planted as a seed in the minds and hearts of the youth, positioning education as the ultimate fortress where conflicts dissolve and the tools of destruction are shattered.
