Somalia consolidates justice pillars and supports women’s leadership

MOGADISHU — H.E. Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, inaugurated a high-level workshop in Mogadishu aimed at empowering Somali women and expanding their leadership within national decision-making centers, according to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).

The forum, organized by the Somali Gender Equality Movement (SOMGEM), seeks to mobilize efforts between women leaders and civil society to formulate a strategic vision ensuring women play an inclusive role in shaping Somalia’s political future, as reported by official sources in the capital.

In her address, the Minister emphasized that Somalia has taken historic steps in the rights sector, most notably through the formal adoption of a 30% women’s quota in Electoral laws, reflecting a genuine political will, as stated in the national news dispatches.

Her Excellency reviewed the humanitarian legislations recently approved by the Council of Ministers, including laws against gender-based violence and the banning of female genital mutilation, according to the Ministry’s statement carried by the national agency.

The Minister noted that these legal reforms act as a protective shield safeguarding the dignity of Somali women and protecting their fundamental rights in alignment with universal human rights principles, as highlighted in the forum’s news coverage.

Ambassador Al-Makhzoumi called on workshop participants to produce actionable recommendations, affirming the Federal Government’s commitment to surmounting obstacles preventing female talents from accessing sovereign positions, following the report by the national news agency.

This initiative aims to build bridges of cooperation between government institutions and civil movements to ensure the sustainability of these rights, transforming them into a deep-rooted institutional culture, according to official news sources.

The opening session concluded by reaffirming that empowering women’s leadership is the ultimate guarantee for achieving comprehensive stability, as Somalia continues its efforts to build a modern state founded on social justice, as reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).

These legislative and rights-based steps adopted by Somalia represent a “white revolution” in the country’s legal system. Their significance extends beyond politics, forming a fundamental pillar in protecting the social fabric and upholding human dignity. Such reforms place Somalia on the map of leading nations in rights-based reform within the Horn of Africa.
