​MOGADISHU —  In an extraordinary moment embodying the will for excellence among Somali youth, the Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported the details of an unprecedented historic milestone achieved by two students from Mogadishu University, as the first team to represent the country in the Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong, marking a new dawn for national educational institutions in international forums.

The Somali team, according to SONNA Agency, featured a distinguished representation by students Samira Yusuf and Sabirin Elmi, under the supervision of Coach Ibrahim, in a step considered a cornerstone for the academic and legal community, placing Somalia’s name on the global legal advocacy map for the first time in one of the most prestigious international academic competitions.

​This participation is the first of its kind in the history of the moot, which focuses on international commercial arbitration, legal writing, and oral argument. The 23rd edition attracted hundreds of prestigious universities, highlighting the scale of the challenge and the excellence demonstrated by Mogadishu University students against the world’s major law schools.

​The Somali National News Agency indicated in its report that this appearance reflects the strenuous efforts of the higher education sector to engage globally and equip students with practical skills, enabling them to compete with international expertise in complex cross-border legal issues and interact with peers from diverse legal cultures.
