MOGADISHU — In a strategic move to mitigate climate challenges, the Somali Federal Government has disbursed $3.88 million in insurance compensations aimed at restoring the livelihoods of thousands of pastoralist families affected by drought.
The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that this direct financial support reached 17,734 herders across the country, acting as a proactive measure to address the harsh impacts of drought on the livestock sector, the backbone of the local economy.
According to sources followed by (SONNA), the funds were transferred directly to beneficiaries to ensure a swift humanitarian response and provide necessary liquidity for herders to rebuild their flocks and protect their dignity.
This initiative is part of the “DRIVE” Takaful program, an innovative financial system based on Islamic Sharia principles of cooperation and risk-sharing, enhancing the economic resilience of pastoralists, as noted by the Somali agency.
(SONNA) indicated that this program is the fruit of collaboration with the World Bank, blending regulatory reforms and smart financing with digital infrastructure to create a safety net focused on long-term sustainability.
Beneficiaries were selected based on precise records from April to October of last year, ensuring compensation reached those most vulnerable to environmental risks, according to reports from the official Somali source.
This government action aims to shift the paradigm of disaster management, moving from temporary aid to structural financial solutions that preserve the dignity of herders and secure the future of the nation’s livestock.
This national initiative redefines social solidarity in Somalia, emphasizing that protecting livestock is a safeguard for national food security and a cornerstone of social stability in rural and remote areas.
This achievement transcends mere financial figures to become a message of loyalty to the land and its people. It demonstrates how political vision combined with technical solutions can forge a future that does not bow to nature’s harshness but flourishes through resilience and solid solidarity.
