MOGADISHU — In a step reflecting the international community’s commitment to addressing escalating crises, international initiatives continue to support the most affected groups in Somalia, seeking to alleviate the impact of drought and conflict threatening the livelihoods of millions.
International News Agencies reported that the European Union has announced €63 million in humanitarian funding to assist Somalia’s most vulnerable communities, targeting hunger, malnutrition, and forced displacement.
The agencies noted that this support aims to address the repercussions of ongoing conflict and worsening drought conditions, which have led to soaring food prices, leaving approximately 6.5 million people facing acute food insecurity.
According to the EU statement reported by global sources, the funding will prioritize life-saving integrated health and nutrition services, treatment for severe acute malnutrition, clean water, sanitation, and emergency education.
The statement indicated, as reported by international news agencies, that the aid will be delivered through trusted humanitarian partners operating on the ground, ensuring that support reaches those affected in central and remote areas effectively and inclusively.
This announcement comes at a critical time when Somalia is suffering from a decline in international funding, with an estimated 1.85 million children under five at risk of acute malnutrition, necessitating an urgent response to save lives.
The European Union affirmed, according to global news reports, its commitment to coordinating with international partners through the “Food Security Crisis Preparedness Plan,” noting that its total humanitarian aid to Somalia has exceeded €750 million since 2017.
UN estimates suggest that the humanitarian situation in Somalia remains one of the most complex globally, particularly in the Galgaduud and Mudug regions, where half a million people have been displaced since last September in search of basic necessities.
This European grant underscores the importance of collective international efforts to bolster community resilience against climate shocks, as urgent aid remains the cornerstone for protecting fragile development gains and preventing the region from sliding into a deeper humanitarian disaster.
