Humanitarian initiative relieves drought-affected families in Mudug

MOGADISHU — Within the framework of national solidarity to address the humanitarian repercussions of severe drought, approximately 130 families in Afbarwaaqo, Qoriweyn, and surrounding villages in eastern Mudug have benefited from an emergency relief campaign aimed at alleviating the acute living crisis in the region.

The aid package included food supplies, clean drinking water, and livestock to support families who lost their productive assets. This initiative was donated by Mogadishu-based businessman and intellectual Khadar Nuur Mohamed to support vulnerable areas, as reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).

Field deliberations indicated that this assistance arrived at a strategic moment, as local communities in eastern Mudug suffer from acute food insecurity due to prolonged dry spells, which have led to pasture degradation and the significant loss of livestock—the economic backbone of these villages.

The distribution was widely welcomed by local authorities and traditional elders, who praised this noble gesture. They emphasized that the initiative helps stabilize residents in their original areas and reduces the necessity for forced displacement to major cities in search of livelihoods.

Traditional elders expressed their gratitude for this qualitative support, which directly addresses the needs of pastoralists and farmers. They stressed that private sector solidarity with local communities represents the primary defense against the recurring natural disasters facing the country recently.

Local administration issued an urgent appeal to other business leaders and charitable organizations to emulate this initiative, as the scale of needs in remote areas of eastern Mudug exceeds current capacities, requiring a comprehensive humanitarian response to save thousands of struggling families.

Field reports confirmed that distributing livestock as part of the relief package is a significant developmental step, contributing to rebuilding the “live assets” of affected families and ensuring a minimum level of food and economic sustainability against harsh climate fluctuations.

The initiative concluded that enhancing the role of national elites in relief work consolidates social solidarity values, affirming the community’s ability to innovate local solutions for major humanitarian challenges amid the exceptional circumstances in the Horn of Africa.

The initiative by Khadar Nuur Mohamed in eastern Mudug is a vivid embodiment of “Humanitarian Citizenship.” The response of national elites to distress calls in remote areas reflects a deep awareness of the need to protect the social fabric from disintegration caused by environmental disasters.

According to observers, the success of such qualitative interventions lies in combining immediate food relief with the rehabilitation of productive capacities, paving the way for pastoral communities to transition from vulnerability to sustainable resilience.
