Mogadishu discusses enhancing food security and innovation

MOGADISHU — In a strategic move reflecting Somalia’s aspirations toward agricultural leadership and food self-sufficiency, the capital, Mogadishu, hosted yesterday a high-level scientific and economic event. The “Somali Conference on Agriculture and Food Security” gathered leading academics and policymakers to chart the nation’s agricultural future.

The one-day conference, held at the Jazeera Palace Hotel and organized by Zamzam University of Science and Technology, featured in-depth discussions on innovative solutions to climate challenges and sustainable food supply chains.

The summit’s second edition aimed to formulate a comprehensive national vision, prioritizing the development of indigenous seed varieties to enhance agricultural resilience against rapid environmental changes.

Sessions highlighted the critical importance of high-quality seed development, particularly legumes, as the cornerstone for boosting productivity and achieving national food sovereignty.

Participants called for accelerating the digital transformation of the agricultural sector by integrating modern technology and scientific research to enhance its contribution to the national GDP.

The conference emphasized the central role of smallholder farmers, advocating for technical support and advanced services to ensure the continuity and efficiency of national production.

Experts reviewed climate adaptation strategies, asserting that aligning government policies with field research is the ultimate guarantee to mitigate the impacts of droughts and floods.

The deliberations underscored the value of public-private-academic partnerships in creating an investment-friendly environment that supports the economic stability of rural communities.

Zamzam University reaffirmed its commitment to leading research innovation, positioning the conference as a bridge between scientific solutions and practical field applications.

The final recommendations urged the enactment of laws to protect national plant genetic resources and encouraged investment in smart agriculture for sustainable growth.

These national efforts serve as a key pillar in reducing reliance on imports and strengthening Somalia’s position as a potential major food supplier in the Horn of Africa.

Somalia aims to leverage its vast arable lands and abundant water resources to reclaim its role as the region’s “breadbasket,” with agriculture serving as the backbone of the economy for over 70% of the population.
