Somali PM presides over graduation ceremony at UPEACE

MOGADISHU — H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, presided over, yesterday, Saturday, the graduation ceremony of a new cohort of Master’s and PhD scholars at the University for Peace (UPEACE) in Mogadishu, as part of national efforts to support Somali academic cadres and enhance higher education.

The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that the Prime Minister expressed his pride in the graduates, commending their dedication and scholarly efforts, which will significantly contribute to state-building and the promotion of peace and sustainable development.

According to SONNA, Prime Minister Barre emphasized that Somali students attaining PhD and Master’s degrees within their own country is a major victory for the education sector and tangible evidence of the recovery of the nation’s educational institutions.

The Prime Minister described the event as a historic day highlighting academic progress, stressing that these scholars are the ones who will lead the change and innovation that Somalia seeks in both the current and future phases.

SONNA further reported that the Prime Minister praised the leadership of the University for Peace (UPEACE) for its role in improving the quality of higher education, affirming that the government prioritizes education as a key tool to overcome stability and social development challenges.

The Prime Minister noted that the government’s vision considers education a fundamental means to improve quality of life, explaining that the “National Transformation Plan 2025–2029” is primarily centered on developing human potential and investing in minds.

Through SONNA, the Prime Minister encouraged graduates to utilize their knowledge to serve the Somali people and contribute to national development, emphasizing their vital role in rebuilding effective governance systems and stabilizing the country.

Barre also highlighted that national universities are strategic partners in the reconstruction process, and their academic outputs are the pillars upon which Somalia will rely for its comprehensive renaissance and to move beyond the past.

The Somali National News Agency concluded its report by noting that the ceremony honored top-performing students amidst a celebratory atmosphere reflecting optimism for the future of national cadres capable of facing challenges with knowledge and science.

Somalia’s higher education sector has undergone a radical transformation over the past decade, moving from total collapse due to conflict to a stage of stability and academic growth. The presence of international institutions like the “University for Peace” granting PhDs within Mogadishu is a testament to international confidence in the Somali security and educational environment. The focus of the “National Transformation Plan” on human capital reflects the Somali leadership’s realization that the path to a “modern state” is built through scholarly elites capable of resource management and conflict resolution through civilized methods.
