Somalia launches pioneering project to empower thousands of fishermen and protect national wealth

MOGADISHU — In a major developmental step that carries good tidings and renewed hope for thousands of coastal residents, the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy in the Federal Government announced the inauguration of a vital new project. This ambitious initiative aims to transform the country’s fishing sector into a sustainable driver for comprehensive prosperity and human development.

This significant inauguration, which serves as a boost to the national economy, took place yesterday, Friday, in the capital Mogadishu, attended by Mr. Ali Ifi Ali, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy. The project is an outstanding model of fruitful international cooperation, being implemented jointly by the Ministry, the friendly Government of Japan, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported these important details.

A Purely Humanitarian and National Agenda

The project is built upon a deeply humanitarian and national agenda:

  • Empowerment and Infrastructure: Working to develop the fishing sector’s infrastructure to enhance its productive and economic capacities, which means increased opportunities and income for Somali fishermen.
  • Protection of Livelihoods: The project aims to improve services related to the protection of marine resources from illegal exploitation that threatens citizens’ livelihoods, while simultaneously empowering coastal communities to sustainably and responsibly benefit from these riches, ensuring a dignified and secure source of income for thousands of families.

In this context, Deputy Minister Ali Ifi Ali affirmed that this direction is not just an economic plan, but a clear commitment to creating sustainable job opportunities and accelerating developmental growth that directly impacts the citizen’s life.

He emphasized the paramount importance of the project’s role in combating illegal fishing and promoting sound ocean management, which is viewed as protecting national wealth and the rights of future generations.

Reports from the Somali National News Agency (SONNA) indicate that this project will significantly enhance Somalia’s capacity to monitor its vast coastline.
