Humanitarian initiative to enhance inclusion and educational capabilities of persons with disabilities in Somalia

MOGADISHU — Qatar Charity has implemented a comprehensive humanitarian initiative in the Federal Republic of Somalia aimed at supporting and empowering persons with disabilities. The project involved the distribution of modern assistive devices designed to facilitate social integration, enhance educational capabilities, and promote self-reliance.

Reports published by the Qatari newspaper “Al-Sharq” indicated that the initiative included providing medical eyeglasses, hearing aids, white canes for the visually impaired, and digital audio Qurans. These tools benefited 136 individuals with hearing and visual impairments, aligning with international efforts to bolster inclusive social development.

According to “Al-Sharq” newspaper, Mohammed Osman Saleh, Social Welfare Coordinator at Qatar Charity’s office in Somalia, stated that this initiative is part of sustainable programs to provide this group with the necessary tools to increase learning opportunities. He emphasized that investing in human capital lies at the heart of developmental work.

In this context, “Al-Sharq” highlighted that the project received wide acclaim from local educational institutions. Abdul Qadir Mohieddin, Director of the Al-Bashir School for the Blind, noted that these specialized tools have granted students greater confidence in mobility and effective academic performance.

It is noteworthy that Qatar Charity’s efforts in Somalia during the current year included the distribution of over 700 wheelchairs and the provision of monthly financial stipends to 192 persons with disabilities, as part of its ongoing mission to support vulnerable groups and achieve sustainable development goals
