MOGADISHU – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) held an official meeting with the Italian non-governmental organization COOPI in the capital, Mogadishu, to discuss ways of enhancing joint cooperation in humanitarian response and disaster management.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Mohamud Moalim Abdulle, Chairman of SoDMA, while COOPI was represented by Mr. Manuel Ciarcelluti, Head of Mission for Somalia and Kenya. A number of senior officials from both sides also attended.
During the meeting, the two parties agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a formal framework that focuses on building Somalia’s capacity to handle disasters and support the most vulnerable segments of the society.
Key areas of cooperation agreed upon include: strengthening early warning systems, reducing disaster risks, and providing support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and those affected by humanitarian crises.
The Chairman of SoDMA stated that this meeting represents a pivotal step in his country’s efforts to consolidate international partnerships to alleviate the suffering of affected populations and build their resilience.
For his part, the Head of COOPI’s Mission affirmed the organization’s commitment to working within the official government frameworks, stressing the importance of collaboration between international and national entities to ensure effective humanitarian responses and provide sustainable solutions.
