Berbera logistics hub opening accelerates aid delivery

HARGEISA — The World Food Programme (WFP), in partnership with the government of Somaliland, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art logistics hub in Berbera, a move expected to dramatically speed up humanitarian aid distribution and strengthen regional trade links.

According to a report by Hiiraan Online, the strategically located facility near Berbera Port is set to become a vital lifeline for countries grappling with conflict and climate crises, including Somalia, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.

Designed to cut response times for delivering food and relief supplies, the hub features high-capacity warehouses, temperature-controlled storage for perishables, and dedicated customs clearance facilities. Michael Dunford, WFP’s Regional Director for Eastern Africa, called the development “game-changing infrastructure” that will enable the agency to reach millions in need with greater speed and efficiency.

El-Khidir Daloum, WFP’s Country Director for Somalia, hailed the opening as a milestone, noting it would deliver “faster operations, stronger oversight, and a more efficient, accountable supply chain,” as he shared on X.

The initiative has also earned praise from international partners. Zlatan Milišić, WFP’s Country Director in Ethiopia, described the hub as a “game changer,” while UK development official Tatiana Fernandes expressed pride in Britain’s investment in Berbera, calling it “an important, strategic corridor to eastern Africa.”

Somaliland’s Minister of Transport, Abdillahi Abokor, emphasized that the project reflects the region’s ambition to position itself as a major logistics hub in the Horn of Africa.
