Program trains Somali youth in agricultural mechanization

MOGADISHU —  In a major step toward modernizing the country’s agricultural sector, the Federal Government of Somalia has launched a specialized technical training program focused on agricultural machinery. The initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Hon. Mohamed Abdi Hayir, aims to train 30 Somali youth in the operation and maintenance of tractors and other farm equipment.

According to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the six-month program is being implemented in collaboration with Gaalooge Company and CASE IH, an internationally recognized agricultural machinery manufacturer headquartered in Italy. The training is designed to build the technical capacity of young Somalis and prepare them to play a vital role in the country’s agricultural development.

As reported by SONNA, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Gaalooge Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize their cooperation. The agreement covers areas such as hands-on technical training, agricultural exhibitions, field demonstrations, and the promotion of innovation in farming practices.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to empowering a new generation of agricultural technicians and engineers who can address the growing demand for skilled labor in Somalia’s farming sector. The initiative is also aligned with broader national efforts to boost food security and enhance rural livelihoods.

By equipping youth with practical skills and exposure to modern technologies, this program represents a strategic investment in Somalia’s future. SONNA highlighted that the project reflects a broader vision to mechanize farming and reduce the country’s dependence on manual labor.
