Somalia to host 2nd national conference on resilience

MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has begun high-level preparations for the Second Somalia Disaster Resilience Conference, set to take place in Mogadishu on October 22–23, 2025.

On Sunday, SoDMA Chairman Mohamoud Moallim Abdulle chaired a strategic consultative meeting at the agency’s headquarters to accelerate planning efforts for the landmark event. The session gathered senior officials and technical teams to review progress on logistical arrangements, stakeholder engagement, and the development of the conference agenda.

The upcoming conference will bring together a broad spectrum of participants, including government institutions, humanitarian organizations, international partners, climate experts, and community leaders, under the central theme of strengthening Somalia’s resilience to natural and man-made disasters.

Chairman Abdulle emphasized the importance of building on the momentum from the inaugural 2023 conference, which laid the foundation for a unified national framework for disaster risk reduction (DRR).

“We are committed to ensuring this conference will not only reflect our collective achievements, but also shape the path forward in building a resilient Somalia,” he said.

He noted that the October event will serve as a vital platform to assess progress made, exchange innovations in disaster preparedness and response, and galvanize stronger partnerships for climate adaptation and community resilience.

Somalia continues to rank among the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations, frequently impacted by droughts, floods, and conflict-induced displacement. The 2025 conference aims to spotlight integrated strategies for early warning systems, local capacity building, risk financing, and community-based disaster reduction.

SoDMA confirmed that preparations are ongoing in close collaboration with federal and state authorities, civil society, and international partners, with a shared commitment to ensuring the success of this pivotal event.
