Galmudug appeals to SoDMA for urgent drought relief

MOGADISHU — Amid worsening drought conditions in central Somalia, Galmudug’s Deputy President, Ali Dahir Eid, has issued an urgent appeal to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) for immediate humanitarian intervention to support affected communities, particularly those near the Ethiopian border.

Speaking during a high-level meeting at SoDMA’s headquarters in Mogadishu on Saturday, Deputy President Eid painted a bleak picture of the humanitarian situation in Galmudug, warning that thousands of families face acute shortages of food, water, and shelter.

“The situation is dire,” said Eid. “People are in urgent need of assistance, and we are calling on SoDMA to respond immediately.”

The two officials also explored longer-term recovery measures, with Eid proposing the creation of a modern meat processing and cold storage facility to support Galmudug’s livestock economy—an initiative he believes could foster job creation and economic resilience in drought-prone areas.

SoDMA Chairman, Mohamoud Moallim Abdulle, welcomed the proposal and affirmed the agency’s readiness to deliver emergency aid while supporting sustainable development initiatives. He expressed SoDMA’s intent to mobilize international support for the livestock project, noting its potential to bolster food security and income generation.

“We are committed to providing urgent assistance where it’s needed most and backing projects that build long-term resilience,” said Abdulle.

Somalia continues to face compounding humanitarian challenges, with climate shocks, insecurity, and displacement straining already-limited resources. SoDMA has been working to strengthen coordination with federal member states like Galmudug to scale up its disaster response and better address local needs.

As funding shortfalls and access constraints hamper relief efforts, the partnership between SoDMA and regional authorities is seen as vital to ensuring timely and effective aid delivery.
