Somalia commits to boost local food production

MOGADISHO — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said Monday that his government is fully committed to promoting domestic food production as a key step toward economic self-reliance and long-term development.

Speaking at the opening of the National Conference on Food and Agriculture Investment in Mogadishu on Monday, Barre highlighted the need to reduce dependency on food imports and urged Somali investors to prioritize the agricultural sector.

“We want to reduce our reliance on imported food. We have the land and the people ready to boost domestic production,” the prime minister said.

The conference brought together government officials, private sector representatives, and agricultural experts to discuss challenges facing food production in Somalia, as well as investment opportunities in agriculture and agribusiness.

Prime Minister Barre also listened to presentations from Somali youth entrepreneurs who showcased agricultural innovations at the forum. He encouraged young people to pursue education and innovation in agriculture to help build a self-sustaining generation.

Agriculture Minister Mohamed Abdi Mareye said the event is expected to strengthen collaboration between the government, farmers, and investors, guided by a national strategy aimed at transforming the sector.
