MOGADISHU — At least ten mortar rounds struck parts of Afgoye, a key district on the outskirts of Mogadishu, in a deadly attack on Monday, security sources have confirmed.
The mortars landed in several neighbourhoods as well as near a military base housing government forces. Preliminary reports suggest both civilian and military casualties, though official figures have not yet been released.
Among those reportedly killed is Hussein Haji Mohamed, known as Aw Koombe, a government security official.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that senior figures, including Banadir Police Commander Moallim Mahdi, may have been in the area at the time of the attack. However, there has been no official statement from Somali security agencies.
Today’s shelling in Afgoye follows a similar mortar attack last week on Halane military base, near Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport, raising concerns about Al-Shabaab’s ability to launch long-range strikes near the capital.
The attack underscores a growing security challenge as militants continue to test the limits of government-controlled territory around Mogadishu.
