Somali minister advocates for climate resilience and support at COP29 in Baku

BAKU — At the COP29 Summit in Baku, Somali Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi, addressed the international community, highlighting Somalia’s commitment to community-led adaptation amidst severe climate impacts.

She emphasized the urgency for adaptation strategies deeply rooted in Somali communities facing ongoing droughts and flooding, advocating for strengthened local governance and community-driven resilience efforts.

Minister Almakhzoumi called on international partners to bolster Somalia’s adaptation initiatives, urging direct funding to reach communities most affected by climate change.

She also held a meeting with the World Meteorological Organization’s Secretary-General to advance the establishment of the Somali National Meteorological Agency (SNMA), focusing on technical support and early warning systems to improve climate risk awareness across Somalia.

The Somali delegation at COP29 includes senior officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and representatives from the Somali Disaster Management Agency, all advocating for enhanced global climate cooperation.
