ADDIS ABABA — Somalia has on Monday officially joined African Risk Capacity, ARC, established to help African governments improve their capacities to respond natural disasters.
The agreement has been signed by Somalia’s Humanitarian Affairs & Disaster management Minister Khadija M. Diriye, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
ARC is a Specialized Agency of the African Union established to help African governments improve their capacities to better plan, prepare, and respond to extreme weather events and natural disasters.
Through collaboration and innovative finance, ARC enables countries to strengthen their disaster risk management systems and access rapid and predictable financing when disaster strikes to protect the food security and livelihoods of their vulnerable populations.
Somalia will become the 35th member of the bloc, and is the first country to join the ARC in 2021.
The announcement comes a day after humanitarian leadership declared drought in Somalia.
