Somalia imposes a night curfew to curb COVID-19 pandemic

MOGADISHU — The Somali federal government has imposed a curfew in the capital, Mogadishu as part of measures to halt the spread of the Coronavirus.

While addressing the media, Police Commissioner Gen. Abdi Hassan Mohamed said the government will be implementing a night curfew between 20:00 and 05:00 starting Wednesday (Apr 15) which is aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The police boss said all movements will be restricted and businesses within the city will remain closed from 8 pm every day to 5 am.

The curfew will have some exceptions, including for the transport of medical supplies, movement of people into quarantine, patients and travel of medical personnel. He added.

The government stressed the importance of respecting the curfew in order to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Somalia has so far announced 25 cases of the deadly disease and two deaths.

The disease which has been declared a pandemic by WHO has so far claimed 114,253 lives and infected around 1,853, 393 people.

The East African country remains among countries with few cases of the disease as most African countries record double-digit figures.
