JOWHAR – As part of its continued humanitarian efforts to address the impacts of natural disasters and strengthen the resilience of local communities, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) today, Sunday, distributed emergency food assistance to hundreds of drought-affected families in Balad District of the Middle Shabelle Region. The intervention came in response to worsening humanitarian conditions caused by prolonged drought effects, declining resources, and increasing pressure on local livelihoods.
SoDMA confirmed that the aid distribution targeted the most vulnerable groups and families directly affected by drought and food insecurity, stressing that the intervention forms part of its broader strategy to provide urgent assistance to affected communities and reduce the humanitarian burden facing residents, particularly in rural areas heavily dependent on agriculture and pastoral activities.
The agency explained that families in affected areas of Balad District are facing growing challenges due to declining agricultural production, limited access to water sources, and disruptions to pastoral activities, which represent a major source of income for large segments of the population. SoDMA noted that prolonged climate pressures have intensified economic and social difficulties among local communities.
The agency further emphasized that its humanitarian response extends beyond direct food distribution, including detailed needs assessments, field monitoring, and continuous coordination with local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and development partners. These joint efforts aim to improve the effectiveness of interventions and ensure that assistance reaches those most in need.
Officials stressed that addressing drought impacts requires a coordinated national response that combines government efforts, humanitarian support, and community participation. They highlighted that early action, preparedness planning, and stronger coordination mechanisms are essential to reducing the consequences of climate-related disasters and protecting vulnerable populations.
SoDMA continues to implement field programs across drought-affected areas of Somalia as part of a national vision aimed at moving from emergency response toward stronger disaster preparedness and resilience-building. Through improving early warning systems, strengthening rural community readiness, and developing more effective disaster management mechanisms, the agency seeks to build a comprehensive national framework capable of responding to recurring climate challenges.
