NAIROBI – The Federal Government of Somalia and the Republic of Kenya have signed a joint cooperation agreement on disaster management aimed at strengthening bilateral coordination in responding to humanitarian and natural crises and improving rapid response capacities across the Horn of Africa.
The signing ceremony was held in Nairobi between the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the Kenya Red Cross. The agreement was signed on the Somali side by SoDMA Chairman Mohamud Moalim Abdullahi and on the Kenyan side by Secretary-General of the Kenya Red Cross Dr. Ahmed Idris, as part of an institutional partnership to enhance joint humanitarian cooperation.
The agreement focuses on supporting affected communities, particularly in border areas, through the development of early warning systems, improved risk assessment, and expanded data sharing on climate change and emergency situations, contributing to more effective response and reduced disaster impacts.
It also includes strengthening training programmes and capacity-building for emergency response teams, as well as improving storage and logistics systems for relief supplies to ensure higher preparedness for different types of natural and climate-related disasters.
Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in preparedness, response, recovery, and reconstruction under a three-year renewable framework, aimed at strengthening coordination and enhancing regional readiness.
This agreement comes at a time when the Horn of Africa is experiencing increasing climate-related challenges and a rise in natural disasters, making regional cooperation essential for faster response and life-saving interventions.
Experts say the agreement marks an important step in Somalia–Kenya relations in disaster management, contributing to a more effective regional crisis response system and strengthening the resilience of affected communities
