MOGADISHU — The Independent National Human Rights Commission of Somalia has strongly condemned an incident involving the abuse and mistreatment of a Somali girl in Mogadishu, describing it as a violation of human dignity and fundamental rights protected under national laws and international human rights standards.
The commission expressed deep concern over the circulation of videos related to the incident on social media platforms, noting that the dissemination of such content not only compounds the harm suffered by the victim but also causes further psychological and social distress to her and her family.
Commission Chairperson Dr. Maryan Qasim Ahmed stated that the incident clearly contravenes the principles of human dignity and basic rights, calling for serious action to ensure that all those responsible are held accountable under the law.
The commission emphasized the need for an urgent, transparent, and impartial investigation to establish the full circumstances of the case and bring those involved to justice, thereby reinforcing public confidence in the rule of law and the justice system.
It also urged members of the public to cooperate with the relevant authorities by providing any information that may assist ongoing investigations, while refraining from sharing or reposting material that could violate the victim’s privacy or further undermine her dignity.
The commission stressed that protecting women and girls from violence and abuse is a collective responsibility requiring the combined efforts of state institutions, civil society organizations, and the media to promote a culture of respect and safeguard fundamental rights and freedoms.
According to the commission’s statement, it stands in solidarity with the victim and her family and remains committed to defending human rights, promoting accountability, and ensuring justice for vulnerable individuals affected by rights violations.
Violence and abuse against women and girls remain among the most pressing human rights concerns in Somalia despite ongoing efforts to strengthen legal protections and improve support mechanisms for victims. Human rights advocates continue to emphasize the importance of public awareness, effective accountability measures, and the protection of victims’ privacy as key elements in building a more just and rights-respecting society.
