Disaster authority strengthens preparedness for seasonal flood risks

NAIROBI — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has launched renewed efforts to strengthen its preparedness for potential flooding during the upcoming rainy season through a high-level meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, with the participation of government officials, international partners, humanitarian organizations, and donor representatives.

The meeting was opened by the Chairman of the agency, Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, alongside Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle. Discussions focused on enhancing early preparedness measures and strengthening preventive actions to reduce the impact of anticipated floods on vulnerable communities.

Participants reviewed ways to improve early warning systems, strengthen emergency response planning, and enhance coordination between government institutions and humanitarian partners. They also explored options for mobilizing financial resources to support communities most at risk from natural disasters.

Ambassador Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle highlighted the importance of increasing the contribution of the Somali diaspora and the business community to humanitarian response efforts, emphasizing their potential role in supporting affected populations during emergencies.

For his part, the SoDMA Chairman stressed the need to deepen cooperation between government institutions, donors, and humanitarian organizations to improve national preparedness, accelerate response mechanisms, and safeguard lives and livelihoods in flood-prone areas.

According to information published on the official page of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), the meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s disaster risk management capacity and enhance preparedness for recurring climate and humanitarian challenges.

Somalia regularly faces flooding risks associated with seasonal rains, particularly in areas along the Shabelle and Juba rivers, where heavy rainfall can lead to displacement, infrastructure damage, and agricultural losses. In recent years, the Somali government and its international partners have intensified efforts to strengthen early warning systems and anticipatory action mechanisms aimed at reducing humanitarian impacts and improving community resilience to climate-related disasters.
