MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) held talks with a high-level delegation from the Arab Republic of Egypt on strengthening bilateral cooperation in humanitarian affairs and disaster management, as part of joint efforts to enhance responses to Somalia’s growing humanitarian challenges.
The meeting was held in Mogadishu, where SODMA Chairman Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle received Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs, Ambassador Mohamed Karim Fouad, in the presence of the Egyptian Ambassador to Somalia, to discuss mechanisms for enhancing coordination and expanding areas of humanitarian cooperation.
The Somali side briefed the delegation on the latest humanitarian developments in the country, highlighting the continued impact of recurrent droughts, declining livelihoods, and rising internal displacement in several affected regions.
Both sides discussed ways to strengthen the capacity of national institutions responsible for disaster management, improve rapid response capabilities, and enhance field coordination to ensure timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to the most affected populations.
The two sides emphasized the importance of continued support from regional and international partners to Somalia’s efforts in addressing humanitarian crises, contributing to alleviating suffering and strengthening the resilience of local communities.
The Egyptian delegation reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to continuing its support for Somalia in humanitarian relief and disaster management, while enhancing technical and institutional cooperation in support of stability and development.
The two sides also stressed the importance of bilateral partnerships in strengthening national response capacities, improving early warning systems, and enhancing coordination between relevant institutions in both countries.
This cooperation comes amid ongoing humanitarian challenges in Somalia caused by drought, climate change, and armed conflict, which have led to worsening food insecurity and rising internal displacement, making regional and international partnerships essential for effective response and protection of vulnerable populations.
Somalia has been facing recurring humanitarian crises for years due to drought, climate change, and armed conflict, resulting in deteriorating living conditions, rising internal displacement, and increased food insecurity. In this context, the Federal Government relies on regional and international partnerships to strengthen its emergency response capacity. Cooperation with the Arab Republic of Egypt forms part of this approach, contributing to institutional capacity building, disaster management systems development, and faster humanitarian response, ultimately helping mitigate the impact of crises and protect the most vulnerable groups in society.
