Somali cabinet appoints new human rights commissioner

MOGADISHU — The weekly session of the Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia was chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, during which a range of national issues on the agenda were discussed, particularly matters related to strengthening the performance of constitutionally mandated independent institutions.

During the meeting, the Cabinet approved by majority vote the appointment of a new member to the Independent National Human Rights Commission of Somalia, as part of efforts to complete the institutional structure of the commission and enhance its operational capacity.

Mr. Mohamed Hassan Nur was appointed as a member of the commission. He is a prominent legal professional selected through a transparent and open competitive process, following the vacancy created by the resignation of a former member.

The Cabinet affirmed that the appointment process was conducted in accordance with established legal frameworks and professional standards, ensuring the strengthening of the commission’s capacity and continuity in fulfilling its mandate to protect human rights and uphold justice.

The session concluded with a reaffirmation of the importance of supporting independent national institutions and reinforcing their role in promoting the rule of law and safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms.

The Independent National Human Rights Commission of Somalia is a key constitutional institution responsible for the protection and promotion of fundamental rights and freedoms.

This appointment reflects the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the independence and effectiveness of national institutions and ensuring their continued operation in line with constitutional and professional standards, thereby contributing to good governance and the rule of law.
