MOGADISHU — In a national gesture reflecting the highest values of social solidarity, the Federal Republic of Somalia observed World Blood Donor Day this Sunday. The event was held at the National Blood Bank Center in Mogadishu, featuring the participation of senior government officials, health sector leaders, and prominent civil society representatives.
The ceremony was graced by Dr. Maryam Mohamed Hussein, Minister of State for Health and Acting Minister of Health, alongside Dr. Abdifatah Qasim Mohamud, Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism. The presence of parliamentarians and key medical personnel underscored the national priority placed on strengthening the country’s health services.
Participants emphasized the vital importance of fostering a culture of voluntary blood donation as an ethical responsibility to ensure sustainable medical supplies. The National Blood Bank Center highlighted its recent achievements, noting that it has successfully facilitated over 16,000 donations, thereby meeting the critical needs of more than 95 public and private hospitals nationwide—a significant milestone in the development of the national health infrastructure.
The event featured a tribute segment for regular donors, who were awarded certificates of appreciation. This gesture honored their long-term commitment to supporting the national blood supply and recognized their indispensable role in saving the lives of countless patients dependent on these life-saving transfusions.
