Somalia launches Eid Qurbani project supporting displaced

MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), in strategic partnership with Qatar Charity, has launched the annual Eid Al-Adha 1447H Qurbani project, a deeply compassionate humanitarian initiative aimed at supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable groups nationwide.

The humanitarian project was officially inaugurated in the capital, Mogadishu, where the Assistant to the SoDMA Chairman for Arab and Islamic Affairs, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohamed Hussein, opened the event on behalf of the SoDMA Commissioner, alongside representatives from the Banadir regional administration and the Qatar Charity office in Somalia.

According to a press update published on SoDMA’s official Facebook page, this ambitious seasonal initiative is designed to alleviate severe living pressures, directly benefiting an estimated 87,600 individuals among displaced families and disadvantaged households across the country.

The update shared via SoDMA’s official Facebook page further stated that the initiative aligns with comprehensive government frameworks intended to strengthen seasonal humanitarian responses during blessed religious occasions, ensuring dignified food aid delivery to underserved populations.

SoDMA called upon all humanitarian partners, particularly Qatar Charity, to govern field distribution mechanisms and execute them in accordance with high standards of transparency, integrity, and equity, thereby guaranteeing that relief reaches targeted beneficiaries across Federal Member States and Banadir.

For his part, Mr. Abdulfatah Adam Moalim, Director of Qatar Charity’s office in Somalia, reaffirmed the organization’s steadfast commitment to implementing the project under global relief standards, emphasizing mutual keenness to ensure fair delivery to the most vulnerable families while upholding strict operational accountability and transparency.

He further noted that this project reflects the deep-rooted partnership and ongoing bilateral cooperation between Qatar Charity and Somali authorities, highlighting the organization’s forward-looking plans to expand comprehensive humanitarian and development interventions throughout the country in the coming phase.

SoDMA concluded by stating that the project embodies the highest values of humanitarian solidarity and social cohesion between national and international institutions, significantly contributing to community stability while mitigating the daily suffering of households affected by protracted displacement and crises.

Seasonal Qurbani projects serve as prominent humanitarian mechanisms that enhance short-term food security for impoverished and displaced households, particularly within environments enduring the consequences of protracted and complex emergencies. In Somalia, these initiatives transcend temporary relief, acting as a vital catalyst for social cohesion and easing acute economic pressures faced by camp populations. The successful coordination between the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and Qatar Charity highlights institutional advancement in managing global partnerships and streamlining international aid into direct distribution channels, effectively establishing foundational blocks for robust social safety nets that bolster regional stability and domestic resilience frameworks.
