Puntland government assesses regional humanitarian conditions

BOSSASO — The Puntland Government has launched an extensive field assessment mission across several regions affected by climate-related challenges and livelihood pressures, as part of efforts to strengthen humanitarian response and address the growing needs of vulnerable communities.

The mission is led by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Abdinasir Yusuf Haji-Green, accompanied by a technical delegation from the ministry, with visits covering Sanaag, Haylaan, and Karkaar regions.

According to a press update published through the ministry’s official platforms, the assessment focuses on evaluating the impact of the ongoing drought and its consequences for local populations, particularly pastoralist communities and households whose livelihoods depend heavily on livestock.

The delegation conducted field surveys and direct visits to drought-affected locations that received limited rainfall and have witnessed increasing movements of pastoralist families searching for water sources and grazing land for their animals.

The mission also covered several districts and surrounding rural areas, including Baraagaha Qol, Xingalool, Dhahar, and Qardho, with the aim of gathering first-hand information to guide humanitarian interventions and prioritize assistance based on actual needs.

The Ministry stated that the field exercise forms part of broader efforts to strengthen early warning systems and enhance coordination with humanitarian partners, helping ensure that relief assistance and essential services reach the most affected communities in a timely manner.

Large parts of Puntland continue to face mounting challenges linked to climate variability and recurring drought conditions, which place significant pressure on pastoral and rural livelihoods. Field-based assessments remain critical for understanding humanitarian needs on the ground and directing available resources toward the most vulnerable populations, while supporting longer-term resilience and adaptation efforts across affected communities.
