Ministry of education launches national curriculum review

MOGADISHU — In its tireless pursuit to consolidate the pillars of knowledge and develop the educational system in line with contemporary requirements and sustainable development goals, the Somali government has launched a new phase of comprehensive educational reform. This initiative aims to forge a promising future for coming generations by developing national curricula and enhancing the quality of educational outcomes across the nation.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education in Mogadishu announced, Yesterday, Wednesday the formation of a specialized 15-member national committee tasked with implementing the recommendations of the National Education Conference, a strategic step aimed at achieving a qualitative leap in the national curriculum structure.

The official Ministry statement—as detailed by field news sources—clarified that the committee will be chaired by Mr. Mohamed Abdulkadir Noor, with Mr. Abdullahi Ahmed Bariise serving as deputy chair, while Mr. Daud Mohamed Makaraan will assume the duties of committee secretary.

The new committee will undertake pivotal tasks in reviewing and developing national educational curricula from Grade 1 to Grade 12, ensuring their alignment with national identity and modern academic standards to guarantee the regional and international competitiveness of Somali students.

Ministry news reports indicated that this move activates the core outcomes of the National Education Curriculum Review Conference held last February, which established a clear roadmap for modernizing cognitive and educational content.

The committee will operate within a framework of institutional integration with federal and state-level education authorities, ensuring unified educational visions and overcoming past challenges faced by the system through a rigorous, scientific, and methodical approach.

The national plan relies on strengthening partnerships with educators, pedagogical experts, and international education partners to exchange technical expertise and provide the new curricula with the latest educational tools and innovations that stimulate creative thinking among students.

These reforms—according to the Ministry’s official source—aim to build a resilient educational system capable of responding to rapid changes, contributing to the preparation of a qualified human cadre to lead the nation’s journey of construction and comprehensive transformation in the coming years.

The Ministry affirmed that this step reflects the government’s firm commitment to making education the primary driver of development, noting that the curriculum review is not merely an administrative procedure, but a sovereign investment in the minds of Somali youth to ensure their leadership and excellence.

The formation of this committee crowns a series of recent successes in the education sector, confirming that Somalia is moving steadily toward reclaiming its civilizational role as a beacon of science and knowledge in the region, away from past pains and present challenges.

The government counts on the committee’s results to deliver an enhanced version of the school curricula that meets the aspirations of Somali families and provides an attractive, stimulating learning environment ensuring the right of all to a modern, equitable, and sustainable education.

Betting on the development of educational curricula is a bet on shaping the “national conscience” and forging a new dawn of stability and prosperity; for knowledge is the fortified stronghold and the ultimate guarantee for protecting national achievements. This harmony between political will and academic expertise paves the way for a future where the light of science shines in every home, transforming challenges into opportunities for creativity and comprehensive human leadership.
