Somalia and China discuss enhancing academic and research cooperation

BEIJING — Believing that knowledge is the true engine of civilizational progress, and embodying her strategic vision to build scientific communication bridges with global academic institutions, Somalia launched a new phase of in-depth research cooperation from the Chinese city of “Yangzhou.” This phase aims to utilize academic innovation as a humanitarian and developmental tool to serve community issues and enhance national institutions’ ability to keep pace with rapid scientific changes in the third millennium.

The Somali National University (SNU) delegation, participating in the East African Affairs Conference, held official talks with Professor Liu Qiaoquan, Rector of Yangzhou University. The two sides reviewed mechanisms for activating joint academic cooperation and developing scientific programs that address current developmental needs, as reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), which highlighted this partnership’s importance in supplying the Somali labor market with specialized scientific talents.

The meeting involved a comprehensive assessment of the scientific outcomes and strategic discussions witnessed at the conference. The Somali academic mission briefed the Chinese university leadership on the core themes of the research sessions, reaffirming Somalia’s determination to localize global expertise in advanced scientific research and technical innovation to ensure the sustainability of the comprehensive educational renaissance across various regions.

For his part, the Rector of Yangzhou University welcomed the delegation, proposing enhanced partnership through qualitative initiatives, including support for establishing a “Center for Somali Studies.” According to SONNA, this initiative aims to strengthen research capacity and deepen scientific understanding of Somali and regional affairs, supporting knowledge exchange and building specialized academic cadres capable of leading independent research and contributing to scientific-based developmental policies.

On the sidelines of the visit, a ceremony was held to launch a documentary exhibition commemorating the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Somalia and China. The exhibition highlights the depth of historical ties and the strategic partnership between the two friendly nations, embodying decades of fruitful cooperation in educational, cultural, and developmental fields, confirming that the friendship between the Chinese and Somali peoples is based on a long civilizational legacy and common aspirations for peace and prosperity.

This academic movement seeks to expand SNU’s international partnerships by concluding agreements that ensure the exchange of curricula, professors, and researchers. This contributes to raising the quality of higher education and providing an innovative learning environment, in line with national transformation plans for 2026 that prioritize investment in human capital and skill development for reconstruction and institutional stability.

Reports from the Somali News Agency emphasized that these meetings represent an extension of the state’s policy of knowledge openness. This aims to enhance the Somali presence in international academic forums and create permanent communication channels with global research centers to serve developmental and social trends, providing a fertile academic environment for Somali students and researchers aspiring to contribute to their nation’s elevation.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on a clear roadmap to implement the proposed research initiatives, emphasizing that investing in minds and cultural exchange is the surest path to sustainable prosperity. This enhances Somalia’s position as an active partner in the global civilizational and knowledge race, securing competitive educational opportunities for future generations that meet Somali society’s aspirations for progress and leadership.

This scientific and research movement goes beyond being a mere academic protocol; it serves as a “Knowledge Charter” reshaping the future in Somalia. Here, ancient Chinese experience meets resilient Somali ambition, proving once again that the power of science is the strongest weapon against challenges, and that building the human being is the cornerstone of building the nation. Somalia remains a symbol of will and intellectual advancement in the heart of the African continent.
