Somalia bolsters health leadership, empowering women and competencies

MOGADISHU — In a strategic effort to overhaul the medical system and safeguard the lives of mothers and children, Somalia took a significant step today toward strengthening institutional leadership within the healthcare sector. H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Adam, Minister of Health and Human Services, issued a decree appointing Dr. Muna Hussein Hassan Ahmed as General Director of Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital, coinciding with the appointment of new leadership for the Ministry’s Secretariat by the Prime Minister to ensure integrated administrative and medical performance.

In his statements—as reported by the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Health and Human Services—the Minister emphasized that Dr. Muna’s appointment embodies the state’s direction toward enhancing women’s roles in leading prestigious medical institutions, reflecting a belief in her ability to drive positive change in the quality of care provided to Somali families.

His Excellency directed the new director to uphold the highest standards of responsibility, transparency, and accountability, stressing that the ultimate goal is to ensure mothers and children receive urgent, safe medical services that preserve their human dignity and contribute to lowering mortality rates while elevating public health.

In a related context, the Ministry welcomed the decision by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to appoint Mr. Yusuf Hassan Isaac as the new Director General of the Ministry, a move described by official Ministry sources as an effort to strengthen the high-level administrative structure and support the federal government’s reform path in the health sector.

Dr. Ali Haji noted that these simultaneous appointments aim to achieve full harmony between the Ministry’s policies and field operations in hospitals, ensuring efficient performance and directing resources toward improving government health facilities to face increasing epidemiological and climate challenges.

Through its media platforms, the Ministry expressed appreciation for the efforts of former officials, asserting that the upcoming phase requires innovative administrative thinking based on governance and oversight to ensure continuous development at Banadir Hospital and other national health institutions in line with international standards.

Ministerial directives to the new leaders focused on the humanitarian aspect of patient care and developing the skills of medical staff to ensure a resilient health system that contributes to a healthy society and supports the Somali people’s aspirations for comprehensive, fair healthcare without discrimination.

The Minister urged all healthcare workers to cooperate with the new leadership to transform current challenges into real opportunities for development, asserting that Somalia is moving forward in building robust institutions that reflect the state’s ambition for health leadership and social well-being for all its citizens.

The Somali government’s move toward empowering women in leadership positions and modernizing high-level administrative structures represents a fundamental shift in state-building strategy. Empowering competencies in vital institutions like Banadir Hospital and the Ministry of Health is the true guarantee for transforming political commitments into field results that protect national health security and ensure a bright future for coming generations.
