MOGADISHU — H.E. Hassan Hussein Mohamed, Somali Minister of Livestock, Forestry, and Range, received Dr. Hamid Nuru, the newly appointed Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Somalia, to discuss strategic cooperation in food security and pastoral resource development, according to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).
During the meeting, both parties reviewed the current food security situation in the country and explored ways to accelerate relief and developmental efforts aimed at mitigating the drought’s impact on the livestock sector, with a heavy focus on supporting the stability of affected pastoralist communities facing significant challenges to their livelihoods.
According to SONNA sources, the meeting reached a consensus on the need to bolster technical aspects related to livestock development, ensuring the establishment of a robust production system resilient to recurring climatic and environmental shocks that threaten the livelihood security of the population.
The Minister and the UN delegation discussed mechanisms for creating new investment opportunities in the animal production sector, aiming to transform current challenges into broad developmental prospects that contribute to self-sufficiency and enhance national exports as a core pillar of the national economy.
Both sides emphasized the importance of close collaboration to develop long-term strategies for forest and range protection, serving the sustainability of pastoralists’ livelihoods and reducing the severity of human suffering resulting from natural resource scarcity and vegetation degradation.
The Somali News Agency reported that this meeting represents a significant step toward aligning international efforts with Somali national plans, ensuring an integrated humanitarian and developmental response that places the needs of pastoralist citizens at the forefront of the state’s strategic priorities.
The session concluded with a shared commitment to accelerating the implementation of agreed-upon programs and ensuring that technical and relief support reaches the most vulnerable and hardest-hit areas, in fulfillment of sustainable development and the protection of Somali human dignity through a comprehensive food security system.
This high-level meeting occurs at a pivotal moment as Somalia strives to transition from emergency relief to the sustainable development of its livestock sector, which serves as the primary lifeline for the majority of its population. The growing partnership with the World Food Programme aims not only to bridge food gaps but also to build national capacities for climate-smart pastoral resource management. This strengthens Somalia’s position as a nation capable of transforming its vital resources into a safeguard for regional food security, while preserving the dignity of its citizens amidst rapid environmental changes.
