Saudi project bolsters environmental sanitation for Somali displaced

MOGADISHU — According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Secretary-General of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization, Abdullah Al-Muhaidli, confirmed that the water and environmental sanitation project in Somalia’s displacement camps represents a qualitative response to urgent humanitarian needs.

During the project’s handover ceremony, Al-Muhaidli explained that the initiative serves as an effective model for organized action, enhancing access to safe water and improving environmental practices, which directly protected thousands of families from diseases.

The Secretary-General praised the generous support from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), emphasizing that this leading role embodies Saudi Arabia’s values of giving and its constant pursuit to alleviate the suffering of crisis-affected nations worldwide.

H.E. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Mowallad, Saudi Ambassador to Somalia, underscored that the project aligns with the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Somali people in overcoming environmental and health challenges, following the directives of the wise leadership.

In a related context, Abdullah Saud Al-Suqairan, follow-up official at KSrelief’s Africa branch, stated that the project targeted areas including Mogadishu, Baidoa, Kismayo, Galkayo, and Bossaso to provide decent living conditions for displaced persons.

Al-Suqairan detailed the field achievements, which included the construction and equipping of 750 integrated sanitary facilities benefiting over 26,000 displaced individuals, contributing directly to improving life quality and reducing health risks.

The Saudi Press Agency highlighted the Centre’s commitment to sustainability by providing community awareness programs and necessary maintenance tools, ensuring the project’s long-term benefits and fostering a comprehensive healthy environment for the displaced.

Abdirahman Mohamed Hussein (Waheed), Assistant Chairman of Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), expressed deep gratitude to Saudi Arabia for funding the project and to the Arab Organization for its diligent supervision of the field execution.

These joint efforts reflect an international commitment to enhancing community resilience in Somalia through qualitative infrastructure projects that carry significant long-term health and social impacts, ensuring dignity and living stability for the displaced.

The completion of this vital project demonstrates that Arab humanitarian work transcends temporary relief toward building sustainable preventive systems, reaffirming that upholding human dignity begins with securing a healthy and fundamental environment.
