Somalia grants 10 national companies funding to enhance agricultural innovation

​MOGADISHU — The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Republic of Somalia has announced the launch of a national program to bolster agricultural innovation, providing financial grants to ten national companies selected as winners of the “2025 Open Innovation Challenge.” This initiative is part of government efforts aimed at modernizing the sector and enhancing its contribution to the national economy.

H.E. Asad Abdirizak Mohamed, State Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, stated during an official event that the initiative aims to empower national companies to implement innovative technical solutions designed to improve production quality and develop value chains, ensuring efficient market access for farmers.

The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) clarified that this support, executed in cooperation with the Innovation and Agriculture Development Center, primarily focuses on stimulating rural entrepreneurship and creating new employment opportunities.

News monitoring by the SONNA indicated that the program is supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Rural Recovery Project. It emphasized that the companies underwent a transparent and competitive selection process to ensure the delivery of practical solutions to food security challenges, aligning with the national strategy for achieving sustainable economic development and self-sufficiency.
