Mogadishu begins a new chapter with teacher exams

MOGADISHU — The Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, in a pivotal move to elevate the nation’s educational standards, has commenced final examinations for the first cohort of government-recruited teachers. This significant step marks the culmination of a two-year national training program designed to certify a new generation of qualified educators.

According to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), these final exams are a critical component of the government’s comprehensive strategy to reform Somalia’s education sector. The examinations, administered by the Somali National University (SNU), are being taken by teachers from the program’s inaugural 2023 intake. Their successful completion will pave the way for their formal certification and deployment to schools across the country.

Meanwhile, the second cohort of teachers, who enrolled in 2024, are advancing to the second year of their training. This initiative underscores the Somali government’s unwavering commitment to investing in human capital and ensuring that students receive instruction from a professional and well-prepared teaching workforce.

This program is seen as a fundamental pillar in the ongoing efforts to rebuild and strengthen the national education system, laying the groundwork for a more prosperous future for Somali youth.
