Hormuud, Save the Children to improve child protection via tech

MOGADISHU — In a remarkable step bridging humanitarian efforts and technological innovation, Hormuud Telecom and Save the Children have signed a strategic partnership agreement aimed at improving the well-being of children and vulnerable communities across Somalia through inclusive and sustainable digital solutions.

The agreement was signed at a formal event held at Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, attended by senior leaders from both parties and high-level representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia. Attendees included the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Jibril Abdirashid Haji, and ministers of planning, education, and the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Mr Mohamud Moallim Abdulle.

According to Shabelle Media Network, the partnership aims to harness Somalia’s expanding digital infrastructure to uplift lives, especially for children affected by conflict, poverty, and lack of access to essential services.

Key Areas of the Agreement:

  • Promoting digital inclusion by providing affordable technology and improving digital literacy among families in underserved communities.
  • Strengthening emergency response systems using Hormuud’s telecom infrastructure to support crisis communication and humanitarian assistance.
  • Expanding access to education and healthcare through distance learning platforms, mobile health messaging, and digital cash transfers.
  • Empowering Somali youth through digital entrepreneurship, vocational training, and job creation initiatives supported by the Hormuud Salaam Foundation.

Impact Figures from the Partnership:

  • Despite low internet penetration in Somalia, over 11 million mobile subscribers are connected through networks like Hormuud, signaling huge potential to bridge the digital divide.
  • Over 3 million Somali children are currently out of school due to displacement and poverty. This partnership will help pilot mobile-based learning programs in remote regions.
  • Save the Children’s cash transfer programs, which have supported thousands of families, will now be expanded and digitized through Hormuud’s EVC Plus platform.
  • Hormuud’s SMS alert system will be used to support early warning campaigns and deliver vital child protection messages.
  • The Hormuud Salaam Foundation has trained over 5,000 Somali youth in the past three years. With this new partnership, the goal is to double that number by 2027.

Speaking to Shabelle Media Network, Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Yusuf, Chairman of Hormuud Telecom, stated:“Today is a historic moment that reflects our joint commitment to the well-being of Somali children. This partnership strengthens both development and humanitarian efforts nationwide. We believe collaboration will drive lasting change.”

Mr. Mohamud Mohamed Hassan, Save the Children’s Country Director in Somalia, added:

“This partnership is a leap forward in using technology to serve children. With Hormuud’s reach and innovation, we can break the barriers that have long blocked vulnerable children from accessing essential services and opportunities.”

Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Jibril Abdirashid Haji, emphasized:“More than 70% of Somalia’s population is made up of children and youth. When a national player like Hormuud collaborates with a global organization like Save the Children, it sends a strong message—investing in children is investing in our country’s future.”

Hormuud Telecom and Save the Children have both previously led humanitarian and development programs in education, healthcare, and emergency response. According to Shabelle Media Network, this new alliance is expected to serve as a model for deeper collaboration between Somalia’s private sector and international aid partners.
