DMA organizes key meeting to discuss worsening drought

MOGADISHU — In response to the rapidly worsening drought crisis gripping parts of northern Somalia, the Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, has convened a high-level meeting with international partners and humanitarian stakeholders to coordinate emergency response efforts and chart long-term resilience strategies.

The meeting, held in Mogadishu, brought together key representatives from donor communities and various United Nations agencies. According to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), discussions centered around the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Awdal region and other drought-affected areas, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated and timely aid delivery to vulnerable populations.

Beyond the immediate emergency, participants conducted a comprehensive review of Somalia’s Disaster Risk Management (DRM) policy. This review—reported by SONNA as a pivotal part of the agenda—aims to strengthen national preparedness, response, and recovery frameworks in the face of recurring natural shocks such as drought, floods, and displacement.

A key point of discussion was the implementation of the SoDMA-UN transition roadmap, which outlines the gradual handover of responsibilities from international actors to Somali authorities. SONNA noted that the roadmap is designed to enhance local capacity and institutional leadership in disaster response.

Chairman Abdulle, addressing the gathering, underscored the importance of unified action and emphasized the need for a well-coordinated, multi-sectoral response. “Our ability to deliver life-saving assistance hinges on our collective efficiency and commitment,” he said, as quoted by SONNA. He further highlighted the significance of moving beyond crisis management to long-term investments in resilience and infrastructure.

Crucially, the Commissioner called for strengthening the operational capacity of government institutions at national and local levels. This includes improving access to training, equipment, and logistical support so that Somali agencies can take a lead role in future disaster management efforts.

The high-level meeting, as covered by SONNA, reflects the Somali government’s ongoing commitment—together with its international partners—to addressing both the urgent humanitarian needs and the structural challenges underlying disaster vulnerability. The dual focus on emergency response and resilience-building represents a strategic and forward-looking approach to disaster governance in Somalia.
