Somali PM witnesses Balanballe-Guriceel reconciliation agreement

BALANBALLE — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre witnessed the signing of a reconciliation agreement between clans from Balanballe and Guriceel in Galmudug State, in an effort to end years of conflict and strengthen community peace in the area. The signing ceremony was attended by Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Karie (Qoor-Qoor), as well as clan elders, local officials and community representatives.

The agreement was signed by Ugaas Mohamed Ugaas Kayse and Ugaas Hassan Ugaas, in the presence of 52 clan elders representing both sides who witnessed the signing. The agreement consists of eight points which, according to media reports, provide for future disputes to be resolved in accordance with Islamic Sharia, including compensation and qisas, with the aim of addressing disputes and preventing renewed clashes.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hamza Abdi Barre urged both sides to honour their agreement and resolve any future disputes in accordance with Islamic Sharia. The signing followed preparations and consultations involving federal and local officials and clan elders as part of efforts to achieve reconciliation between the parties.

On development, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Peace House, which is intended to support reconciliation and strengthen community cooperation. He also laid the foundation stone for a school for children who lost their parents during the conflicts, which reports say will accommodate up to 600 students. He also pledged to build a sports stadium and a police station, and to complete the development of Balanballe airport, without announcing a timeline for implementing these projects.

The agreement represents a step towards resolving disputes and strengthening coexistence among local communities. The durability of the reconciliation will depend on compliance with the agreement’s provisions, recourse to the agreed dispute-resolution mechanisms, and continued efforts to prevent renewed violence.
