Somalia opens health clinic at Mogadishu central prison

MOGADISHU – Somalia, through the Ministry of Health and Human Services, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has inaugurated an integrated health clinic at Mogadishu Central Prison, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare services within correctional facilities and improving medical response for inmates in line with national and humanitarian standards.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministries of Health and Justice, leaders of the Somali Custodial Corps, and representatives of the ICRC. Participants said the new clinic will provide comprehensive medical services, including examinations, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care, improving healthcare delivery inside the prison and reducing the need for external referrals except in specialized cases.

Officials noted that the facility has been equipped according to modern standards and includes primary healthcare services, chronic disease management, emergency response, and health awareness programmes. They stressed that the initiative is part of broader government efforts to integrate correctional institutions into the national health system and ensure equal access to healthcare.

The ICRC reaffirmed its continued support for Somalia’s efforts to improve healthcare in detention facilities, describing the project as a model of effective humanitarian cooperation between national institutions and international partners, contributing to better detention conditions and the protection of inmates’ dignity.

In recent years, Somalia has pursued reforms in the correctional sector by upgrading infrastructure and essential services. Integrating healthcare into prisons represents a key pillar of these reforms, reflecting a national commitment to the right to health for all individuals and the development of a more humane and sustainable justice system.
