MOGADISHU — The Federal Republic of Somalia has announced the launch of the second phase of the Women’s Peace and Protection Joint Programme (WPP-II), a strategic step aimed at enhancing the role of women in peacebuilding, leadership, and decision-making, within a comprehensive national vision to consolidate the values of justice and equality.
H.E. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, Minister of Family and Human Rights Development of the Federal Government of Somalia, launched this national initiative during an official ceremony held in the capital, Mogadishu, attended by several senior government officials and representatives of international organizations and community institutions.
The program aims to support the implementation of national policies and legislation that ensure the effective inclusion of women at all levels of governance and political processes, establishing their position as an active and fundamental element in achieving community stability and facing developmental challenges.
This initiative is led by the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development, in operational partnership with UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with necessary technical support provided by the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia.
The program is scheduled to run over the next two years, where it will be implemented on a broad national scale, marking an extension of the efforts made in the first phase to enhance coordination between federal and local institutions.
Estimates indicate that the program will directly benefit about 6,000 people, while its indirect impact is expected to reach 42,000 beneficiaries, with a special focus on girls, women with disabilities, minority groups, and internally displaced persons.
The program works to build the capabilities of female leaders and foster an enabling environment that allows for greater participation of women in public life, ensuring the protection of their basic rights according to sustainable legal and institutional frameworks that align with the aspirations of Somali society.
This step reflects the Somali government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships with the international community and working to create a political and social environment that respects women’s rights and supports their ambitions for full participation in building the country’s future.
This initiative represents the embodiment of an ambitious national approach that relies on women’s potential as a fundamental pillar in Somalia’s journey of recovery and stability. Linking government strategic planning with UN technical support establishes an integrated work system that does not merely empower women but redefines the development landscape in the country. This ensures a future that is more just and prosperous, built by the hands of the Somali people, affirming that sustainable peace is incomplete without the presence of women as equal partners in national decision-making.
