BRA concludes national tree planting week initiative

MOGADISHU — The Banadir Governorate drew the curtain on the activities of the “National Tree-Planting Week” in Somalia, in a ceremonial event held at Mogadishu City Hall; embodying her deep commitment to her national responsibilities towards the environment, and striving to root the culture of sustainability as an authentic approach in her interaction with natural resources.

This vital initiative comes within the context of the concerted national efforts led by Somalia to restore her vegetation cover and activate the “Greener Somalia” vision, through which she looks forward to building an environmental fortress that protects her from climate fluctuations and enhances the quality of urban life in her cities.

The event witnessed a high-level attendance, led by the Deputy Governor of Banadir for Public Works, Abdumajid Dahir Adan, the Secretary General of the Banadir Regional Administration (BRA), Bilan Bile, and the Director of the Environment and Water Department, Mahad Abdi Farah, who participated in planting trees, in a symbolic gesture emphasizing the integration of administrative roles in adopting environmental causes.

The officials noted during the ceremony that the tree-planting movement was not limited to the heart of the capital, but extended to include all districts of the Banadir Governorate throughout the week, ensuring the spread of environmental awareness in every corner, and achieving effective community participation that reflects the cohesion of the Governorate’s people with their country’s green directions.

These activities fall within a broader strategy adopted by Somalia to fortify her capital against environmental risks. She is not merely seeking visual beautification, but aims to create a vital system capable of resilience, contributing to purifying the air, providing shade, and supporting the ecological balance required in her urban environment.

For his part, the State Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ahmed Omar Mohamed, commended the exceptional role shown by the Banadir Governorate Administration in the success of this campaign, noting that the harmony in work between federal entities and local administrations is the sure guarantee for achieving a comprehensive environmental renaissance covering all parts of the nation.

The Minister affirmed that these qualitative initiatives lay the foundation for a new phase of environmental partnership, expressing his confidence that what has been achieved in Banadir will be a model to be emulated in other Governorates, supporting the development path pursued by the Government in protecting her environmental security.

These trees, which took root in the soil of Banadir today, stand as a symbol of a new covenant Somalia makes with her land; with every sapling sinking its roots deep, the aspirations of a nation determined to restore its natural splendor are renewed. The collective action witnessed in the Governorate paints an environmental canvas for generations to inherit, affirming to the world that Somalia marches confidently toward a greener tomorrow, where national dedication intertwines with environmental responsibility to forge a future worthy of her storied history.
