MOGADISHU — The Somali National University (SNU) has strongly condemned the illegal demolition and encroachment on its land in Mogadishu’s Hodan district, vowing legal action against all parties responsible for these violations.
In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Office, and reported by the local “Goobjoog News” website, the university clarified that the targeted property is legally registered under its name and protected by Somali law as a critical public asset.
The university bolstered its stance by citing a formal legal notice from the Attorney General’s Office issued on January 11, which explicitly reaffirmed SNU’s exclusive ownership and invalidated any external claims to the property.
According to “Goobjoog News”, the unlawful demolition works damaged facilities designated for student services and reached the official residence of the university’s rector, an act described by the institution as a direct assault on academic infrastructure.
The institution confirmed it has initiated all necessary legal proceedings to safeguard its rights, emphasizing that any encroachment on university land is a breach of the rule of law and sabotage of higher education resources in Somalia.
Furthermore, the university called upon security and judicial authorities to cooperate in stopping these violations and securing educational assets, stating that protecting academic institutions is a national responsibility vital for the stability of future education.
SNU urged the public and concerned entities to refrain from participating in any illegal activities involving its land, asserting that the Somali judiciary remains the primary arbiter in deterring those attempting to seize public property unlawfully.
This incident highlights the broader challenges faced by government institutions in reclaiming and securing historical land titles. As the National University seeks to expand its academic footprint, protecting its campus remains a strategic necessity for the development of the country’s education sector.
