Foundation stone laid for “Sheikh Eid training and innovation center” in Mogadishu to empower Somali youth

MOGADISHU — In a strategic move aimed at bolstering the capabilities of Somali youth, Qatar Charity, in partnership with Mogadishu University, has laid the foundation stone for the “Sheikh Eid bin Mohammed Al Thani Center for Vocational Training and Innovation” in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The initiative aims to equip young Somalis with essential technical and vocational skills aligned with labor market demands.

The Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported that the project, spanning 7,000 square meters within the Mogadishu University campus, is designed to benefit approximately 500 young men and women annually. The facility will feature dedicated buildings for innovation, vocational workshops, and classrooms, alongside a multi-purpose hall and integrated service facilities.

According to a statement carried by QNA, the center will offer specialized training programs in handicrafts, technical skills, and entrepreneurship. This intervention seeks to address the economic challenges facing Somali youth, particularly the high unemployment rate—estimated locally at 67%—making the project a qualitative addition to economic stability efforts.

QNA further noted that this project is an extension of a long-standing strategic partnership between Qatar Charity and Mogadishu University that began in 1997. This collaboration has already supported over 3,600 students through the “Student Scholarship” program, many of whom have secured leadership positions in both the public and private sectors, underscoring the sustainable developmental impact of this educational cooperation.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by HE Dr. Abdullah Salem Al Nuaimi, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Somalia, the President of Mogadishu University, and several local officials.
