NEW YORK — Lieutenant General Bashir Mohamed Jama, Minister of Environment and Climate Change for the Federal Government of Somalia, represented the country at the High-Level Roundtable on Solutions to Internal Displacement during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The event was jointly organized by the IOM, UNDP, and UNHCR.
In his address, Minister Bashir emphasized that displacement in Somalia is not merely a statistic, but a daily reality for millions, driven by the devastating effects of conflict, recurring droughts, floods, and climate change.
He highlighted key measures undertaken by the Government of Somalia, including integrating durable solutions into the National Development Plan, establishing institutions such as the National Disaster Management Agency, and actively advancing climate resilience ahead of the upcoming COP30.
The Minister issued a call for global unity, sustained financing, and strong political commitments to tackle the crisis. He stressed that addressing displacement is fundamentally both a humanitarian duty and a vital development strategy essential for achieving stability and prosperity in Somalia.
