Somalia urgently appeals for aid to avert crisis

MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has issued an urgent humanitarian appeal to the international community and donor partners for immediate and coordinated support.

This plea comes as a severe humanitarian situation threatens the lives of millions in Somalia, driven by persistent drought, conflicts, and food insecurity.

SoDMA confirmed that the multi-faceted crisis necessitates a rapid and comprehensive response. More than 4.4 million people face acute food insecurity, while approximately 2.5 million people in northern Somalia are severely affected by drought, which has impacted 26 districts.

The agency added that recent conflicts in the Hirshabelle and Jubaland states have displaced over 100,000 people. Moreover, nearly 1.7 million children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition, with 466,000 in a state of severe acute malnutrition.

Addressing the water scarcity issue, SoDMA noted that less than 30% of the population has access to safe and reliable water sources, which exacerbates the spread of diseases.

Despite these challenges, the Somali government and local community have shown strong commitment to addressing the crisis. The federal government and the Somali business community have each pledged $700,000 to support response efforts.

SoDMA called for the mobilization of resources and increased funding from traditional donors, Gulf partners, and the private sector to provide a comprehensive response that includes food, health, water, and shelter.

The agency stressed that every day without an adequate response increases the suffering of innocent people, urging the international community to stand by Somalia at this critical moment to avert an impending humanitarian disaster.
